1. GHGMI Issue Briefs: Promoting Accountability; Taking Quality Assurance Seriously
The Institute is pleased to announce the release of two GHGMI carbon market “issue briefs.” The papers, available immediately on the Institute website, examine two issues with which GHGMI has extensive experience: GHG training and the design of GHG quality assurance programs. We invite you to download and share these issue briefs, and explore the Institute’s ever-growing GHG course catalogue, webinar library, and other GHG resources at www.ghginstitute.org:
“Green Jobs Training: Promoting Accountability in Carbon Markets”
“Taking Quality Assurance Seriously in Carbon Markets”
2. Inside the Institute Blog: What is different about methane (CH4) emissions? The forgotten CO2 in GHG emissions accounting.
By
Michael Gillenwater
In this third blog post on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and Global Warning Potential (GWP) values, I want to focus on a unique characteristic of methane (CH4).
I would venture to guess that many of you are unaware that most GHG emission inventories and offset project methodologies underestimate actual emissions from fugitive emissions of methane. This is the case because these methodologies systemically forget to include an emissions category: “indirect CO2 from the atmospheric oxidation of CH4.”

3. GHGMI Webinar on “Apples & Oranges? Road-testing Offset Protocols”, 12 Noon EDT, Thursday, July 29, 2010
This month’s webinar will be co-presented by Anja Kollmuss and Carrie Lee, Staff Scientists at Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) at 12 noon EDT Thursday, July 29th.
Anja and Carrie will introduce “road testing” research they conducted comparing five offset programs for landfill methane, manure digesters, and afforestation project types. The examined offset programs are: U.S. EPA Climate Leaders, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), California Climate Action Registry (CCAR) [now Climate Action Reserve (CAR)], and Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX). Anja and Carrie will present the quantitative variations their testing revealed and examine the underlying elements that produced differing results, such as: boundary definitions, baseline setting methods, measurement rules, emission factors, and discounts.

The webinar series is provided free for Premium Members and $99 for non-members. To learn more about the Premium Membership program

4. GHGMI 2010 GHG and Climate Change Workforce Needs Assessment Survey
The Institute, in conjunction with Sequence Staffing, has launched its second annual Greenhouse Gas and Climate Change Workforce Needs Assessment Survey. Building on last year’s first-of-its-kind initiative (full 2009 report available online here), the 2010 survey has been designed to further map trends and impressions within the GHG practitioner community. The survey addresses topics including: industry growth, policy requirements, personnel needs, and future professional demands. A joint GHGMI-Sequence summary report on the survey results is due later this year.
For more information and to participate in this year’s needs assessment please visit the survey website: www.greenhousegassurvey.com
